Alamo Basketball Game Update

Dear Mustang Families,

We are writing to provide an important update regarding the upcoming varsity basketball contest with Alamo Navajo scheduled for Tuesday, February 10. Earlier today, representatives from both school administrations met collaboratively to plan for a safe, respectful, and orderly event for all involved.

After careful discussion, the following arrangements have been agreed upon for the February 10 game at Alamo Navajo:

• The game will remain at Alamo Navajo.
• Alamo Assistant Coach Torres will not be present.
• No spectators will be permitted to attend in person.
• The game will be livestreamed on NFHS for families and community members.
• Our players will be provided separate locker-room areas.
• Our team will be escorted along NM-169 to and from Highway 60.
• Tribal law enforcement, county law enforcement, and security personnel will be on site.
• Administration from both schools, along with representatives from the NMAA, will be present.
• There will be no post-game handshake line.
• Three referees will officiate the game.
• Varsity Girls will play at 4:00 p.m.; Varsity Boys will play at 5:30 p.m.

We want to be transparent with our families regarding the seriousness of the fan strike issued by the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA). Both schools mutually agreed that student safety and the existing fan strike are the reasons spectators will not be permitted at the February 10 contest. We understand this decision is disappointing. However, it is critical that we adhere to these expectations. We will also hold a meeting for parents/guardians of varsity girls and boys players this Wednesday at 5:30 pm at the high school library and we will be meeting with the players soon as well.

Looking ahead, postseason games involving Alamo Navajo will be held at a neutral site with fans permitted. However, our fan strike remains in effect throughout the postseason, which means we must continue to represent Mountainair with the highest level of class, respect, and sportsmanship at all times.

We deeply appreciate our Mustang families and fans for your continued support of our student-athletes. Your encouragement matters greatly to our teams.

Go Mustangs!

Sincerely,  Dr. Pedro Vallejo
